Livi were made to pay for a host of missed chances as Dumbarton scored in injury-time to secure their first win of the campaign at the Bet Butler Stadium.

Livi came into the match on the back of their marathon extra-time win over Queen of the South in the League Cup on Tuesday, while the Sons had conspired to throw away a 2-0 lead in the final 12 minutes against Hibernian at Easter Road on the same evening.

Despite their midweek exertions, Livi boss John McGlynn went with the same starting line up and was vindicated as his side made a strong start, Danny Mullen having the first effort of note on 10 minutes with a strike which took a wicked deflection and forced home keeper Danny Rogers to scramble across his goal and tip it wide. From the resulting corner, Mullen turned provider but Gary Glen could only send his cross over the bar. Dumbarton then had their first chance and should really have gone in front as Scott Linton drove down the right and swung in a fine cross for the unmarked Colin Nish and the veteran striker bulleted a header just wide.

As both sides grappled with a strong coastal wind, Livi began to exert themselves and a smart one-two between Keaghan Jacobs and Jason Talbot saw the former fire in a low drive which was straight at Rogers. Jordan White was proving a handful for the Sons defence and he outjumped them again but could only head over the bar. The same thing happened again soon after, White’s header this time landing on the roof of the net. A long ball forward then found the big striker and he showed good feet before firing in a drive which Rogers had to stretch to tip wide.

Gary Glen was next to try his luck with a shot from distance which Rogers did well to hold before Mitch Megginson should have done better for the home side but his effort flew over the bar. Glen was then similarly wasteful as nice build-up play saw him sent clear but his angled shot flew inches wide of the far post as the teams went in all-square.

Livi have been something of a second-half team this season – in fact they’ve only notched one first-half goal all season – and they started the second half strongly with a driving run from McKenna winning a corner and then, from Keaghan’s corner, Callum Fordyce rose well to win the header but Rogers dived to his left to save. Rob Ogleby, on as a half-time sub for Mullen, then sent a decent low ball across goal but Glen couldn’t reach it. Ogleby was the provider again soon after when his cross found Kyle Jacobs but he was so unlucky to see his header come crashing back off the bar. Ogleby and Glen then linked up well to tee up Kyle again but this time his curling effort flew just wide. Dumbarton continued to carry a threat though and Darren Jamieson had to be alert to save Megginson’s well struck effort before sub Chris Kane fired in an effort which beat Jamieson but Kyle was in the right place at the right time to clear the shot off the line. Livi then made a double change, Myles Hippolyte and David Robertson on for Glen and McKenna, as they chased the winner and they probably should have had it when Talbot hit the byline and cut back for Ogleby but, leaning back, he fired his shot well over the bar.

Livi were soon punished for their profligacy as Dumbarton snatched an ill-deserved winner when, after the Lions failed to clear a corner, Scott Agnew sent the ball back in and Kane got in front of his man to head the ball home and get Dumbarton’s first three-point haul of the season.
