Cost of Living Impact on Mental Health 2022-2023
If you are part of the one in four Brits who has cut down essential spending as a result of the cost-of-living crisis, you will know more than anyone how the rising cost of living can create fear and anxiety in us (1).
A BACP survey found that 61% of therapists report their clients are anxious about paying their bills, 52% of therapists say their clients are losing sleep due to financial worries, and 66% claim that the cost-of-living crisis is causing a decline in mental health in the UK (2).
Some people are making the best of a bad situation by saving energy, reducing non-essential spending, re-using items, using their car less, and starting a small business (3).
However, not everyone is able to do this, and some people are unfortunately adopting more dangerous coping mechanisms, as they do not know how else to cope with their worsening financial situation.
Alcohol-specific deaths have risen from 7,565 in 2019 to 9,641 in 2021, which is a staggering 27.4% increase (4).
The following infographic will demonstrate to what extent different societal groups have been struck by fear about the rising cost of living, which ultimately makes them more vulnerable to anxiety, depression, and addiction.
