Boroughmuir Thistle WFC 2-2 Livingston WFC
Livingston earned a great point away from home, holding Boroughmuir Thistle to a 2-2 draw away from home. An early own goal and a great goal finished by Ashley Elizabeth matched Thistle’s Becky Galbraith scoring a double to gain a point.
Captain Natasha Frew returned to the side alongside Ellie Osborne and Nina Hegarty, with Seren McCulloch, Lily Park and Kaitlyn Canavan dropping out.
The Lionesses started brightly, putting pressure on the hosts and getting into their final third. Following the performance in our last outing against St Johnstone, the team looked to have a point to prove. The early pressure was rewarded as Erin Burns’ corner was turned into the back of the net by a Boroughmuir defender, giving us an early lead.
Nina Hegarty did well to create an opportunity but her shot was deflected wide, whilst Jess Murphy was forced to make a vital interception at the other end.
Livi made it 2-0 with arguably our team goal of the season, with Ashely Elizabeth firing home in the end. The Lionesses knocked the ball around very patiently, recycling well before the striker was found on the edge of the box and excellently finished into the bottom corner.
The goals seemed to wake Boroughmuir up, winger Cara Borthwick in particular. The attacker went close with a shot from range that narrowly missed the target, and then rounding Rachel Pirie but her effort in the end was kept out by a fantastic goal line clearance by Elise Macara.
Boroughmuir’s pressure did see them get a goal back before half time, with Becky Galbraith getting a second attempt from close range and finishing into an empty net due to the first attempt being blocked.
Boroughmuir continued to pile the pressure on, with Borthwick getting in behind and creating opportunities. Livi were forced into another two goal line clearances, this time from Briony Morgan and Mya Goodman. Louise Mason’s long range effort also clipped the top of the crossbar on its way over Rachel Pirie’s goal.
Pirie did fantastically to keep the score at 2-1, saving well against Emily Arthur before Jayden Simmons managed to fire wide from close range.
It was Becky Galbraith, though, who equalised for Thistle, running through on goal and finishing calmly to make it 2-2.
Jess Murphy went closest to restoring Livi’s lead whilst Pirie was called into action on a couple of occasions but stood tall and maintained the draw.
The game ended with a 2-2 draw but the battling performance from our side is one to have been proud of. Bouncing back well from the last defeat, the team showed real unity and worked tirelessly for one another in a positive outing.
