St Johnstone WFC 3-2 Livingston WFC (AET)
Livingston Women’s exited the Sky Sports Cup following a 3-2 AET defeat to St Johnstone. A brace from Erin Burns was cancelled out by a late sucker punch as the Saints progress to the next round.
Shannon Todd would be the only player to retain her starting position, with 10 changes made to the starting XI. Amongst the changes saw Anna Murray and Stacey Calder come in for their first appearances of the season.
A stramash in the box would lead to the hosts opening the scoring, with Steffi Simson capitalising on a loose ball.
The Lionesses would bounce back immediately, though, with Todd carrying the ball forward and finding Erin Burns. The wide player took a touch and fired a great finish into the corner, squaring things up inside 10 minutes.
Burns would add a second minutes after halftime, pouncing upon a loose ball by Stacey Calder. With her first attempt saved, Burns was able to squeeze the ball in from a tight angle to give Livi the lead.
The Lionesses were so close to sealing the tie but were dealt with a late blow as Elvie McLean levelled things up. Another loose ball into the box would fall kindly to St Johnstone, with McLean making no mistake from close range.
Extra time would follow with both teams tiring and penalties seeming the likely outcome. However, St Johnstone would snatch a late winner through Fern Newbigging, sending the home side into the next round. A well-worked free-kick would be fired in from Newbigging as it was late heartbreak for Livingston.
Livingston will travel to Perth again next weekend, this time taking St Johnstone on in SWPL 2 action.
